“Jack Kennedy and his wife, Jackie, arrived for the first of the Kennedy-Nixon Television Debates, but had stopped to do a little campaigning along the way. They had left plenty of time, so they could squander a few minutes to pick some more votes. Jackie had even brought along a freshly pressed shirt for Jack because it was a very hot and humid afternoon, and she wanted him to look his best.”

“There was a little rough-hewn shack off to the side in the main studio, probably a left over set from one of the “westerns” they were doing around that time, and it was being used as a makeup and dressing room that evening. While Jack was relaxing in the makeup chair, Jackie chatted with LIFE photographer Paul Schutzer and myself “outside on the porch.”

Jacqueline Kennedy arriving at a Metropolitan Opera Guild Benefit performance of Tosca, with Maria Callas, in New York March 19, 1965.  The benefit performance of Tosca was soprano Maria Callas’ first appearance at the Metropolitan in seven years. At the time, Callas was involved with Greek shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis, who later married Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968.
